Grant History

In its early years (1995 – 1998) the Foundation (then known as the Olive D. Hoffman Memorial, Inc.) provided scholarships for medical students who demonstrated an interest in community health.  Beginning in 1999, the Foundation’s direction changed and it began to focus on a more immediate way to improve the health of the community: increasing access to care for the low-income uninsured in Northern Virginia.

Recent Giving

Summary: In addition to systemic problems like the high cost of both health service and health insurance, common access problems include transportation, language/cultural barriers, health literacy and long waiting times/lists (and related capacity issues) at available clinics. Initially, the Foundation invested in remedying a wide variety of these barriers. Its funding ranged from supporting mobile health van programs, transportation, patient education, and interpretation services to workforce recruitment and training programs, clinic capacity building, advocacy, and programs to link children to medical homes. In 2002, in response to community need and to increase the impact of its funding, the Foundation narrowed its focus to mental health and oral health services. Most of the initiatives in these areas have been in direct services, clinic capacity building and integration of mental health into primary care.
